Bank statements into Tally

Tally does not import a statement the way other packages do. It imports vouchers, as XML, and it matches ledgers by name — which is where this usually goes wrong.

Tally’s own import path. Each transaction becomes a Receipt or Payment voucher with both ledger entries written out, so the books balance on arrival.

A ledger name that does not match creates a second ledger

Tally matches ledgers by name, and a name it does not recognise is created rather than rejected. A bank ledger spelled even slightly differently from the one in your company — "HBL Current" against "HBL Current A/c" — produces a brand new ledger, and every transaction in the import posts to it. Nothing fails, and the balance you expected to change does not. Check the exact name in Gateway of Tally → Chart of Accounts before importing, and use it verbatim.

How to import it

  1. 1Convert the PDF statement to Tally XML, giving the exact name of your bank ledger.
  2. 2In Tally: Gateway of Tally → Import → Vouchers.
  3. 3Give the path to the XML file and confirm.
  4. 4Check the import log. Rejected vouchers are listed by number, and the usual cause is an unbalanced voucher or an unknown ledger.

Questions

Can Tally import a CSV bank statement?
Not directly into vouchers. Tally’s import path expects XML in its own envelope. CSV can be brought in through third-party tools, but the XML route is Tally’s own.
Everything imported into Suspense A/c — why?
That is deliberate. Guessing a ledger per transaction would post rows to the wrong account silently, which is far harder to find later than a single Suspense balance you reassign in one pass.
What does "voucher rejected" mean in the import log?
Usually that its two ledger entries do not sum to zero, or that a named ledger could not be resolved. Every voucher we write is balanced before it leaves, so the second cause is the likelier one.
