About area measurement

Pakistani property units: Marla and Kanal

Marla and Kanal are the standard land area units in Pakistan, derived from the Mughal-era measurement system codified by the British in colonial India. The urban Marla is 272.25 square feet (or 25.293 square meters), and 20 Marla equals 1 Kanal (5,445 square feet, about 506 square meters). 8 Kanal equal 1 acre. Property listings, land records, and house plans in Pakistan are almost always quoted in Marla or Kanal rather than square feet.

The old Marla vs the new Marla

There is a smaller historical Marla of 225 square feet (about 20.9 square meters) that appears in old land records, especially in rural and tribal areas. The modern urban Marla of 272.25 square feet is used by all major Pakistani housing authorities (LDA, DHA, Bahria, capital development authorities) and is what the calculator uses. If you are looking at an old jamabandi or muntakhab record, verify which Marla applies before doing the conversion.

Square meters and the metric system

The square meter is the SI base unit of area. One square meter equals 10.7639 square feet, and one hectare (10,000 square meters) equals 2.471 acres. The metric system uses simple powers of ten, so a square kilometer (1,000,000 square meters) is a million-times multiple of the base unit. Most countries outside the US, UK, and former British colonies use square meters and hectares for all area purposes.

The acre and its historical origins

The acre was originally the area a yoke of oxen could plough in one day, roughly 4,047 square meters or 43,560 square feet. The exact modern definition fixes it to that value. It is still the standard unit for farmland in the US, UK, and many countries with British colonial heritage including Pakistan and India. Large land transactions in Pakistan often quote acre alongside Kanal.

Square yards and the Indian gaz

One square yard equals 9 square feet (since a yard is 3 feet). In India and parts of Pakistan, particularly Karachi, property is sometimes priced in gaz (square yards). 100 square yards is 900 square feet, or roughly 3.3 Marla. The calculator converts between square yards and any other area unit instantly.

Common plot sizes in Pakistan

Standard residential plot sizes in Pakistan are 3 Marla (816 sq ft), 5 Marla (1,361 sq ft), 7 Marla (1,906 sq ft), 10 Marla (2,722 sq ft), 1 Kanal (5,445 sq ft), and 2 Kanal (10,890 sq ft). Larger commercial plots are quoted in acres. A 10 Marla plot is the most common middle-class size in Punjab and Islamabad. The calculator lets you convert any of these to square feet, square meters, or any other unit.

Converting area for tiling, flooring, and painting

Floor coverings (tiles, carpet, laminate) are usually sold by the square meter in metric countries and by the square foot in the US. Wall paint coverage is typically given in square meters per liter. To convert a room area from feet to meters, divide by 10.764. The calculator handles this and all related conversions instantly.

Hectares and farmland

A hectare is 10,000 square meters, or 2.471 acres, or about 100 metric Marla. Pakistani agricultural land is often listed in acres or in murabba (1 murabba = 25 acres = 100 acres in some definitions, depending on region). Modern surveys use hectares for international compatibility. The calculator handles both.

Square kilometers for large geography

Country, city, and region areas are quoted in square kilometers (km²). Pakistan's area is 796,096 km². Lahore is about 1,772 km². Karachi is 3,780 km². For comparison, New York City is 783 km², London is 1,572 km². One square kilometer is 100 hectares or 247.1 acres.

Multiply square feet by 0.092903 to get square meters. For example, 1,000 sq ft is 92.9 sq m. The calculator does this instantly with a single tap.

A standard Marla is 272.25 square feet, or about 25.293 square meters. Some old land records and rural areas use a 225 sq ft Marla, but 272.25 is the standard urban Pakistani definition used by all major housing authorities (LDA, DHA, Bahria).

One Kanal equals 20 Marla. So a 1 Kanal plot is 20 x 272.25 = 5,445 square feet, or about 506 square meters, or 0.125 acre. A 10 Marla plot is half a Kanal.

An acre is 43,560 square feet, or 4,046.86 square meters, or 0.4047 hectare. It was historically defined as the area a yoke of oxen could plough in one day. In Pakistan, 1 acre equals 8 Kanal or 160 Marla.

A hectare is 10,000 square meters, equivalent to 2.471 acres, or 107,639 square feet. It is the standard unit for agricultural land and large-scale areas in countries using the metric system.

Multiply square yards by 9 (since 1 yard = 3 feet, so 1 sq yd = 9 sq ft). A 100 sq yd plot is 900 sq ft. The Indian and Pakistani gaz (square yard) follows the same conversion.

Square meters, square feet, square kilometers, acres, hectares, Marla, Kanal, square inches, and square yards. Any-to-any conversion is supported with one tap to swap.

New (standard) Marla of 272.25 square feet (25.293 sq m). This is the figure used by all major urban housing schemes in Pakistan and matches the official LDA and capital development authority records. The old 225 sq ft Marla is mostly historical and rarely used in property transactions today.

The conversion factors are exact, taken from international standards. Results are shown to 6 significant figures, which is far more precision than any property document or land record uses.

The numbers are accurate, but always verify with the official land registry document. Property in Pakistan is typically priced per Marla or per Kanal, so the calculator helps you compare prices when one listing uses Marla and another uses square feet.

In urban areas: 5 Marla (1,361 sq ft) is the smallest standard, 10 Marla (2,722 sq ft) is common middle-class, 1 Kanal (5,445 sq ft) is upper middle-class, and 2 Kanal+ is large. Plot sizes are usually quoted in Marla or Kanal, never in square feet directly, except by developers selling to international buyers.

Use the rough rule that 1 square meter is about 10.76 square feet, or 1 square foot is about 0.093 square meters. For mental math, multiply by 10 (slight over-estimate) when going from sq m to sq ft, or divide by 10 when going the other way. The calculator gives the exact figure.
