Bank statements into FreshBooks
FreshBooks leans on its bank connections, and its manual path is CSV. For anything a connection cannot reach — a closed account, an unsupported bank, a period before you connected — CSV is how the transactions get in.
Which format to use

CSV for FreshBooks
FreshBooks’ own import format for bank transactions, and the only one it offers for manual upload.
PDF bank statement to CSVImporting a period the connection already covers doubles it
FreshBooks does not reconcile an uploaded CSV against transactions its bank connection already imported. Both sets stay, and there is no merge step. Before uploading, check the earliest date the connection has pulled and end your converted statement the day before it.
How to import it
- 1Convert the PDF statement to CSV.
- 2In FreshBooks: Accounting → Bank Connections → Upload a file.
- 3Select the account and confirm the column headings.
- 4Categorise the imported expenses.
Questions
- Does FreshBooks accept OFX or QBO?
- Its manual import path is CSV. OFX and QBO are used by its bank connections rather than offered for upload.
- Can I import income as well as expenses?
- Yes. A signed amount column carries both — negative for money out, positive for money in — which is what our CSV writes.
