The CSV export has no header row
Wells Fargo’s downloadable CSV starts straight in with data — no column names at all. Xero, Zoho Books and most other importers assume the first row names the columns, so they consume the first transaction as a header and it disappears. Worse, the mapping screen then shows the first transaction’s values as the column labels, which looks like a strange but plausible file rather than an obviously broken one. If a Wells Fargo import is short by exactly one transaction, this is why. Converting the PDF statement instead sidesteps it, because the output is written with proper headers.

Downloaded activity and statements are not the same thing
Every large US bank offers two different exports, and people reach for the wrong one constantly. Downloadable account activity — CSV, and often QFX or OFX — covers a recent window, typically a few months, and stops. Statements are PDFs, are issued per period, and go back years. If you need last March, the activity export will not have it and the statement will; converting the PDF is how that gap is closed.

- My Wells Fargo import is missing the first transaction. Why?
- The bank’s CSV has no header row, so the importer took the first transaction as one. Nothing about the file looks wrong afterwards, which is what makes it expensive to find.
- Can I just add a header row myself?
- Yes, and it works. Add a row naming the columns your software expects. Converting the PDF gives you the same result without editing a file by hand, and with the rows balance-checked.
- Why are the descriptions so long?
- Wells Fargo prefixes a transaction code and reference before the merchant name. The merchant is in there, just not at the front, which matters if you categorise by description prefix.
