Convert a Truist statement to Excel, CSV or QuickBooks

Truist is BB&T and SunTrust merged, and the statement archive still shows it. If your history spans the changeover, you have two different layouts to convert, not one.

Covers Truist One Checking, Truist Business Checking, Enjoy Cash and Future cards.

A year of history can be three different statement layouts

Bookkeepers catching up on a Truist account frequently have legacy SunTrust statements, legacy BB&T statements, and current Truist statements in the same folder — sometimes across a single financial year. They are different documents with different column orders, and a conversion set up for one produces confident nonsense on another. Convert and check each layout family separately rather than assuming a run of statements is uniform. Account numbers changed at migration too, so the older PDFs carry a number that no longer matches the account in your books, and any import matching on account number will refuse them.

How a Truist statement is laid out

Worth checking against the statement in front of you — Truist issues more than one layout, and which you have changes what to look for after converting.

Date formatMM/DD
Running balancePresent on current Truist checking statements
Amount columnsSeparate deposits and withdrawals
Legacy statementsPre-merger BB&T and SunTrust statements use different layouts and different column orders
Account numbersChanged for many customers at migration; older statements carry the legacy number

Downloaded activity and statements are not the same thing

Every large US bank offers two different exports, and people reach for the wrong one constantly. Downloadable account activity — CSV, and often QFX or OFX — covers a recent window, typically a few months, and stops. Statements are PDFs, are issued per period, and go back years. If you need last March, the activity export will not have it and the statement will; converting the PDF is how that gap is closed.

Suggested format

CSV for Truist

Where several statement layouts are in play, CSV is the format to review in — checking one file per layout family is quicker than discovering the problem after import.

Questions

My older statements convert differently from the recent ones. Is that expected?
Yes, if they predate the merger. Legacy BB&T and SunTrust statements are different documents from current Truist ones.
The account number on my old statements does not match my books. Why?
Many account numbers changed at migration. Anything matching on account number — a QBO import in particular — will refuse a statement carrying the legacy one.
Can I convert a whole year in one go?
If the statements share a layout, yes. Across the changeover, convert each family separately and check the first of each before doing the rest.
