Two date columns, and the wrong one lands transactions in the wrong month

Capital One card statements print a transaction date and a posting date, and across a month boundary they disagree — a purchase on 31 January posts on 2 February. Which one belongs in your books depends on the basis you keep them on, and a converter that silently takes the first column it finds makes that decision for you. On a December statement that decision moves revenue or expenditure across a year end. Check which column was used before the first import of the year, not after. Separately, the Debit and Credit columns in card exports are both positive numbers with the sign implied by the heading; read as one column they invert every payment.

How a Capital One statement is laid out

Worth checking against the statement in front of you — Capital One issues more than one layout, and which you have changes what to look for after converting.

Date formatMM/DD/YYYY
Running balancePresent on 360 bank statements, absent on card statements
Amount columnsCard exports commonly use separate Debit and Credit columns; bank statements use one signed column
Card sectionsCard statements separate transactions from fees and interest charged
Posting vs transaction dateCard statements print both; they differ across month ends

Downloaded activity and statements are not the same thing

Every large US bank offers two different exports, and people reach for the wrong one constantly. Downloadable account activity — CSV, and often QFX or OFX — covers a recent window, typically a few months, and stops. Statements are PDFs, are issued per period, and go back years. If you need last March, the activity export will not have it and the statement will; converting the PDF is how that gap is closed.

CSV for Capital One

CSV lets you see which date column and which sign convention came through before the rows reach your ledger — worth it on the first statement, at least.

Questions

Which date should I use, transaction or posting?
Whichever matches how you keep the books. The important thing is consistency: mixing the two across months produces a reconciliation that never quite agrees and no obvious culprit.
My payments came through as charges. Why?
Separate Debit and Credit columns of positive numbers, read as a single amount column. The sign is in the heading, not the number, so it is lost unless the columns are read as a pair.
Is a 360 statement different from a card statement?
Materially, yes. Different layout, different columns, and a running balance on one but not the other. Do not assume a conversion that worked for one will behave the same on the other.
