About making memes

The classic meme style

The "top text, bottom text" format with white uppercase Impact font and a thick black outline became the default meme style in the mid-2000s, popularized by image macro communities on 4chan and Reddit. It is dated by modern meme standards but remains the most recognizable format and works for nostalgia, parody, and intentionally cheesy humour.

Modern meme formats

Many recent memes use other text placements: caption above or below the image (no border), text bubbles, or no text at all. For these, use a tool like the watermark tool or compose in an image editor. The classic top/bottom format still has plenty of life in office Slack, family WhatsApp, and ironic posts.

Choosing a template

Effective memes start with a recognizable image: a stock photo with strong emotion, a movie still, a comic panel, or a screenshot. Sites like knowyourmeme catalog popular templates. For original memes, well-lit photos with a clear subject and simple composition work best because the caption needs space to read.

Font choice

Impact is the default because it is bold, condensed, and reads at small sizes. Arial Black is the closest universal alternative. Comic Sans is sometimes used ironically for wholesome memes. Georgia or Helvetica give a more modern, news-graphic look. The generator lets you switch and preview live.

Color and stroke

White text with a black outline (called "stroke") is the classic because it stays readable over any image background. For specific aesthetic looks, try black text on white (less common but valid), yellow with black stroke (more comic-book feel), or no stroke (modern flat look). Stroke width 4-8 pixels is the meme standard for 1000px wide images.

Image size considerations

The generator auto-scales the default font size to the image width. For 500-pixel-wide images, default font is around 30 px; for 2000-pixel-wide images, it scales up to around 100 px. You can override with the slider. Keep memes large enough to be legible: at least 700 pixels wide for social media, 1200+ pixels for print or large displays.

Copyright and fair use

Memes that use copyrighted images technically infringe copyright, but most rights holders ignore non-commercial meme use because it functions as free promotion. For monetized content (YouTube videos, paid social media, ads), use images you own, public-domain templates from Wikimedia Commons, or licensed stock photos. The legal status varies by country; consult a lawyer for commercial cases.

Why our generator has no watermark

Other meme generators add their logo to your downloads as advertising. We do not. Your meme is yours: clean PNG output with only the image and your text. We charge nothing, store nothing, and brand nothing. The page is supported by display ads elsewhere on Gizmoop, not by watermarking your downloads.

Saving and sharing

Click Download to save as PNG. On mobile, hold the preview image and choose "Save to Photos" or your equivalent. Share directly from there to WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter/X, Threads, or wherever. The PNG is lossless and looks crisp on every platform.

Drop any image, type top and bottom captions, and the generator renders the meme on an HTML canvas with your chosen font, size, color, and stroke style. The result is a PNG you can download directly. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Yes. The generator accepts any JPG, PNG, WebP, or GIF (first frame). Drop your own template, a Drake screenshot, or a fresh stock photo. Templates from imgflip, knowyourmeme, and other sources work the same way.

Impact is the default, which is the classic meme font from the 2000s. You can also choose Arial Black, Helvetica, Comic Sans, Georgia, or Courier. Impact is bold, condensed, and reads well at any size, which is why it became the meme standard.

It is a tradition. Original 4chan-era memes used uppercase for clarity and impact, and the convention stuck. The generator auto-uppercases the text as you type so the result has the classic meme look. If you want lowercase, you can adjust manually after download.

The current generator places one block at the top and one at the bottom, which fits 90 percent of classic memes. For multi-panel memes (Drake, Distracted Boyfriend, Expanding Brain), use the cropper or watermark tool to overlay text precisely, or run the generator multiple times and stitch in an image editor.

White text with a black outline is the classic meme look because it stays readable over any image background, from bright skies to dark interiors. You can change both colors and adjust the outline (stroke) width. For a modern flat look, set the stroke width to 0.

No. Your downloads are clean PNGs with no Gizmoop branding. The original image plus your text, exported as a transparent-background or full-color PNG depending on the source.

The generator handles any size your browser can load. Mobile browsers usually max out around 4096 x 4096 pixels. Desktop browsers handle much larger. The text is auto-scaled based on image width, but you can override the font size manually with the slider.

Tap the Download button to get a PNG file. On iOS, hold the PNG and choose "Save to Photos". On Android, the download usually goes to the Downloads folder; the gallery app picks it up automatically. From there, share to WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter, or anywhere else.

Memes that use copyrighted images can fall into fair use territory, but this depends on the specific image, your country's laws, and the commercial nature of the use. For monetized content, use images you own, public-domain templates, or properly licensed stock photos. The generator does not check sources; that is your responsibility.

Yes. The interface is touch-friendly, and the canvas-based renderer works in all modern mobile browsers. Some very large images may slow down on older phones; for those, resize the image first using our image resizer.

There is no undo button, but every change you make updates the preview immediately. If you want to compare versions, download multiple times with different text or styles. The original image is still in the input above the controls.

Yes. Every operation runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, no server processing happens, and we keep no log of your images or memes. The browser never sends your data anywhere.
