The science: why 1.2 times the diagonal?
Researchers and home-theater organizations have long studied how much of your visual field a screen should fill for an immersive but comfortable experience. The consensus is a field of view of roughly 30 to 40 degrees. Sitting 1.5 times the screen diagonal away fills about 30 degrees (the THX standard for a relaxed cinema experience), while sitting 1 times the diagonal fills close to 40 degrees (the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers reference standard for a more enveloping picture). The sweet spot for most living rooms falls between those two extremes, at about 1.2 times the diagonal, which produces roughly a 35 to 40 degree field of view.
Put simply: sit between 1 and 1.5 times the screen diagonal away, with 1.2 times as the practical ideal. For a 65-inch TV that is between 65 and 97.5 inches (5.4 to 8.1 feet), with 78 inches (6.5 feet) as the sweet spot.
Recommended TV size by seating distance

Why 4K lets you sit closer than 1080p
The older rule of thumb for a 1080p Full HD television was about 1 foot of viewing distance for every 10 inches of screen size. That guideline existed because 1080p panels have a lower pixel density, and sitting too close meant individual pixels became visible, breaking the sense of a smooth image. The practical result is that the 1.2 times diagonal formula works comfortably for 4K, putting you about 40 percent closer than the 1080p rule would suggest for the same size screen. Room-type guidance
The formula is universal, but each room type has its own constraints worth knowing.
- Living room. The primary viewing room in most homes. Measure the distance from the main sofa to the wall where the TV will sit, then apply the formula. Most living rooms fall in the 8 to 12 foot range, pointing to a 65 to 85 inch screen. If multiple seating angles exist (side chairs, a sectional), use the most common viewing position as your reference distance.
- Bedroom. Bedroom viewers typically sit or lie in bed, placing the screen closer: often 4 to 7 feet from the pillow to the dresser or wall mount. That zone suits a 40 to 55-inch TV. - Kitchen and eating area. Kitchen TVs are usually watched at an angle and from a changing distance (cooking, eating, passing through). A 32 to 43-inch set mounted at a comfortable viewing height suits most kitchen counter-to-TV distances of 4 to 6 feet. Prioritize a clear sightline over maximum size in this room.
How high should you mount the TV?
The centre of the screen should be at roughly seated eye level. For most adults sitting on a standard sofa or chair, that means the screen centre is about 42 to 44 inches from the floor. A 55-inch TV is about 27 inches tall (panel only), so the bottom of the panel would sit at roughly 28 to 30 inches from the floor, which is a credenza or low TV stand height.
